Course Description:  While we all agree that the death of a child is a tragedy that our society should work to prevent, not everyone is aware of what is actually being done to reduce preventable deaths of our children in Harris County.  The Harris County Child Fatality Review Team was created for the purpose of decreasing the incidence of preventable child deaths.  This training will allow attendees to understand the team itself, and how it seeks to achieve its important goal.  We will also analyze the trends of child fatalities in Harris County, which some may find surprising.  Finally, we will take an in-depth look at the major cause of death in infants less than a year old -- unsafe sleep environments and co-sleeping -- and provide prevention strategies for unsafe sleep and other major causes of child deaths, which the attendee can use in their practice and even in their own life.

Objectives- This workshop is designed to help you:

1) Discuss the purpose of the Harris County Child Fatality Review Team and the various methods by which the team seeks to achieve their purpose to decrease preventable child deaths.

2) Analyze the trends of child fatalities in Harris County over a decade period, using the HCCFRT’s recently published Decade Report.

3) Explain the risk factors in co-sleeping and unsafe sleep environments in infants, and provide prevention strategies for this major cause of child deaths, as well as some prevention measures for other major causes of child deaths in Harris County.

Who Should Attend:   This workshop is designed for professionals who work with children, families and in the field of child abuse.  This includes professionals in child advocacy, children’s protective services, social work, counseling, mental health, education, law enforcement, legal professionals, and more.
