Live via Zoom Course Description: While it is recognized that some youth commit serious offenses and may need to be detained within a secure setting, research has shown that many youth in the juvenile justice system are there for relatively minor offenses, have significant mental health issues, and end up in out-of-home placement or on probation by default. Diversion programs are alternatives to initial or continued formal processing of youth in the juvenile delinquency system. The purpose of diversion programs is to redirect youthful offenders from the justice system through programming, supervision, and supports. Further, many children are involved in both the juvenile justice system and children's protective services, therefore increasing the challenges they face. Objectives- This workshop is designed to help you: 1) Explore the various programs used in Harris County to divert juvenile offenders away from the juvenile justice system. 2) Assess the importance of diversion programs for juveniles and how they are providing services to children and families. 3) Appreciate the unique challenges of dual status youth and discuss how Harris County Youth Collective connects services across multiple sectors to ensure a coordinated response for children involved in the juvenile justice system and children's protective services. Who Should Attend: This workshop is designed for professionals who work with children, families and in the field of child abuse. This includes professionals in child advocacy, children's protective services, social work, counseling, mental health, education, law enforcement, legal professionals, and more.
